Saving energy and water in the home

Here are some minimal, or no-cost, tips to help you save energy and water, reduce your bills, and reduce your carbon footprint:

1. Unplug your mobile charger after you've charged your mobile
2. Switch off lights if not needed
3. Only boil the amount of water needed for hot drinks etc.
4. Switch off equipment and appliances at the wall instead of keeping them on stand-by
5. Turn off your computer when you're not using it
6. Turn your thermostat down by 1 degree Celsius (1°C)
7. Don't let heat escape by leaving windows open
8. Don't put furniture in front of radiators
9. Don't put warm food in the fridge
10. Place a brick or water-saver in your toilet cistern
11. Fix dripping taps
12. Capture rainwater for garden use

Saving energy in the workplace

We encourage our employees at all our sites and those in the field to think about their energy usage and we are considering all of the following intiatives to reduce our own energy consumption:

1. Provide training on how to save energy at home and at work
2. Provide energy saving light bulbs
3. Run competitions to find the best energy saving ideas to win energy-saving devices 
4. Clean windows to enable better use of natural light
5. Use a Lux Meter to measure brightness of office lighting, with a view to reducing light use
6. Remove light bulbs where lighting isn't needed
7. Connect light sensors to on/off switches in toilets and infrequently used spaces
8. Clean light bulbs and tubes and the mirrors behind them
9. Assess air conditioning needs: heating versus air conditioning, opening windows versus air conditioning. Set controls between 19-24 degrees Celsius.
10. Assess main users of energy users, such as servers and computer rooms
